They need not fear death, yet cannot remember war's hard lessons and thus, will never know peace. It is the mortal races that suffer, as pawns in the Kohan's eternal game. Alliances are forged and broken, empires rise and fall; generations are born and die. As brothers bleed on each other's blades, an ancient force, timeless in its malevolence and tireless in its patience, watches silently, knowing its hour is nigh. The Shadow is rising and a new evil is spreading its nefarious wings.

On the downside, it requires a certain level of micromanagement, and if you don't keep an eye on your troops battles often become a clusterfuck.

Its resource system is also firmly in the early s with multiple resources but only one that really matters. Gold is the only resource that one can have a stockpile of, and thus the management of other resources is to ideally have a minimum deficit with no surplus so that they do not impact your gold income.

Still, it's a fun game and the ability to integrate independent towns and creeps into your army is something we're only very recently seeing come back in strategy games. Alright, let's tackle Kohan II. By now, this game is pretty old but that's never bothered me for any game as long as it still runs — which it does.

The music is pleasant, the graphics are still fine for me and resolution scales to x You have a number of different possible civilizations all with their unique personalities and playstyles. Despite its comically stiff voice acting, it's competitive in terms of real RTS elements and functionality. Why is it still one of my favourites after all this time? Because it, like most games I really like, has something that none of the other ones do.

In this case, it's tactics. Most especially at high levels, this game behaves completely different in terms of strategy because you have to be comfortable losing bases and relocating from place to place and rolling with the punches.

Therefore the goal is to destroy your opponent's super base and they lose. You always know where they are coming from and going to. Not here. Because, while it is possible to have a super-well defended base with a home-field advantage, giant battles between two or more extreme armies are pointless and don't get anyone anywhere. Avoid those and it becomes a game you actually have to think about and therefore a true strategy game.

Relevant to your interests: This may be a sequel to Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns, but it has nothing but theming and lore in common. The original Kohan is completely different. Also, multiplayer does not work because GameSpy, as you well know, has been dead for years. It's no Warcraft III, but it still got me to play the whole campaign. Campaign only -- haven't done any multiplayer. I play retro RTS games don't expect me to have friends: Characterization can be a little off.

Even good studios sometimes blandly type their characters, and you are left with 2d cutouts. You can clearly see the types the major characters fit into but their deeper personalities are more often opaque, if they are even there. The script for the character lines often seems uninspired and forced by stereotypes, and I was at times reminded that this game was made before kickstarter it wasnt a backer reward that theyhad that voice. You're thrown into a well developed civilization where immortal beings called Kohan have been battling across generations.

The mortals around them are drawn into the conflict as well and often they're the ultimate key to the success of either side. There is also a clear good and evil element with the evil Kohan creating abominations as they try to wipe out or subjugate the good Kohan or anybody else in their way.

First, resource collecting is not done by creating a collector and having them constantly sent to various resources. Instead when a building or mine is created, it automatically starts collecting the specific resource. In addition, only gold is stock piled and the rest are subtracted when units are created. Another difference is the way units are created.
